Beautiful Industry - Photographs & Painting - top
Sunday - September 26

Bridge & Theater Galleries Exhibit:
August 13-September 26

Reception: September 17, 7-9pm

This exhibition will feature cheerful acrylic paintings by Mary King and black and white photographs by Gary Cialdella which celebrate the industrial areas of  southeast Chicago and northwest Indiana that some people live in the midst of and other people do not realize still exist.

King and Cialdella take two very different approaches in representing this area, but the work of both makes clear their understanding, and even love for, this part of the greater Chicago region.

Mary King  exhibits widely. She has had one-person shows in New York, Chicago and Detroit. TheChicago Reader and The New York Times like her.  She lives and works in Chicago.

Gary Cialdella is a native of Blue Island. He lives in Michigan and works in Michigan and Chicago.  His book The Calumet Region: An American Place was published by The University of Illinois Press in 2009. Works from the book will be included in the exhibition.

Establishing a Connection: Robert Catania - Photography - top
Sunday - October 31

Exhibit: October 1-31
Reception: TBA

Working as a photographer since the early 1990's, Catania's approach to the photographic medium has evolved with the technology. Currently working with applied digital technologies, Catania has begun to explore documentary photography in the digital world. While historically a field that relies on the camera's ability to recreate reality, Catania's approach challenges traditional thinking by employing selective focus and desaturation. Shooting in the backyards and side streets of Chicago, Catania has aimed his camera and computer at a slowly vanishing subject, the pay phone.

"Establishing a Connection" looks at the places, phones, and conditions that surround a way we once communicated, and wonders aloud about how we communicate now. His treated color prints allow the viewer to explore places that he or she might otherwise have missed, in a way that re-emphasizes what photography does so well...It establishes a connection with the viewer.

Robert Catania's exhibit is part of Chicago Artists Month 2010, the fifteenth annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant visual art community coordinated by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.  For more information, visit www.chicagoartistsmonth.org.
